The New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) are designed to prepare students to understand how and why climate change happens, the impact it has on our local and global communities and to act in informed and sustainable ways. These resources are designed to foster an interdisciplinary approach to climate change education that is evidence-based, action-oriented, and inclusive.
NJPSS is a system of supports and programs for students and educators to be used at the local level to meet the specific needs of each district. These are not one-size-fits-all strategies. The supports and programs are designed to be tailored and molded to provide the necessary supports to assist students and educators as they move forward. Every student, every educator, and every district is different, with unique needs.

Learning Progressions
The New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Science (NJSLS-S) are built on the notion of learning as a developmental progression. They are designed to help children continually build on and revise their knowledge and abilities as they progress from Kindergarten through grade 12.
The resources provide invaluable insight into:
- what the current focus of learning should be;
- what the students learned before they came to your classroom; and
- what they will learn in a future course.
Learning progressions documents:
- Crosscutting Concepts Learning Progressions
- Earth and Space Science Disciplinary Core Ideas Learning Progressions
- Life Science Disciplinary Core Ideas Learning Progressions
- Science and Engineering Practices Learning Progressions
Unpacked Disciplinary Core Ideas
Understanding the Performance Expectations (PE) in the 2020 NJSLS-S is made easier when one uses the supporting documents. To support teachers in developing a clear and accurate understanding of the disciplinary core ideas (DCI) in the NJSLS-S, the NJDOE has created the following documents which compile information from the National Research Council's A Framework for K–12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas, 2020 NJSLS-S, and Evidence Statements for each of the science performance expectations.
